More sun
And yet another sunny clear but a bit chilly day. Maybe we'll have a winter like last; cold and dry. That is very good for my herds; goats and sheep both do much better in a dry climate. Yes, global warming is here to suit my farming style.
Yesterday we ran around doing Friday chores in Eureka. New pillows and a mouse from Target, coffee and foodstuffs from Costco. We stopped by the lumber yard to see about roofing for the milk barn. I'm going to order green painted corrugated tin, and a few fiberglass panels for skylights.
The thing is almost done. Then we start on the garage. Yay. I was missing my drill press the other day..
Brian came by to check out my milk barn. I am not sure if he was impressed. He is pretty detail oriented, and so far there's not a lot of detail. It's just a square utility shed. With really beautiful cedar siding.
I am totally enjoying comics/ graphic novels. After "Need More Love" I wanted to continue on this genre, one I have not really read before. We stopped at Borders and I got a copy of "The Best American Comics 2006" edited by Harvey Pekar, I have enjoyed Pekar ( an odd one, for sure) on David Letterman, and have seen "American Splendor" the movie. Reading these is like watching tiny hand held movies.
I might have lost 2 sheep; John called me last night to say that only 20 sheep had come in. I went over there but couldn't find the missing 2. I am hoping they will show up overnight, but...
It would be odd to lose 2 at once, seems more likely they took off together and got separated. One is my black Merino X Romney ram lamb I saved out this year. Good thing I still have his sire and another ram.
Tomorrow is the spinning contest, and after my win at the fair I think they're gunning for me now. I'm a target.
I got this e mail from the former winner
OK, Ace and Sarah,
Got your running shoes on? I'm ready and oiled up for some
speedy spinning. Look out for Crystal, she could be a mighty
competitor this time. Remember that she had different fiber than
everybody else at the county fair.
Sarah, don't forget, we checked out your speed treddling position
on your Louet.
If they give us twenty minutes, I'd like to see 200 yards + for
all four of us.
BTW, Katie Cosmic might be in the area. If so, I'll try to get
her to compete with us. I don't know if she is speedy enough to be
a threat. I think she is pregnant, but I don't think that is a
factor.
See ya at the fair.
I am less confident about winning this time because now they know to watch for me.
My does are coming into heat so slowly, one one day, days later another. I guess that Neleven and Misty did get bred in early August, as they are the oldest does in the herd and are usually showing regular heats by this time in the season. And I swear they are already looking bred. Another 2 year old that was in heat in August but had another heat might have been bred early and then showed a false heat, as she is drying up and looking large. January is not that far off.
Baby calves are showing up, Brian's lambs; it's getting to be birthing season here.
